What you need
- A Dialpad account where you are a company admin - you generate the API key from the admin settings, so you need admin access.
- A Dialpad Pro or Enterprise plan. Standard plans have no API access, so the connection will not work on those.
- Dialpad Ai transcription turned on, and set to start automatically for calls. This is what produces the transcript CallNote works from.
- A CallNote account. You can start a 14-day free trial at callnote.com.au, no credit card.
Get your Dialpad API key
Dialpad connects with an API key you generate from your own account. It takes about a minute.
- Log into Dialpad on the web at dialpad.com as a company admin.
- Click your avatar in the bottom-left, then open Admin Settings, then My Company.
- Open the Authentication tab, then the API Keys section.
- Click Add Key, name it "CallNote", and create it.
- Copy the key it generates. You only see it once, so copy it before you close the dialog.
Connect Dialpad to CallNote, step by step
- Log in to CallNote and go to Integrations.
- Find Dialpad in the list and click Connect.
- Paste the API key you copied from Dialpad and confirm.
- CallNote validates the key, then registers the webhook and the transcript subscription on your Dialpad account for you. When it finishes, Dialpad shows as Connected.
That is the whole setup. You paste one key. There is no webhook to configure, no callback URL to copy, and no values to move back and forth between dashboards - CallNote handles that side for you.
What happens after you connect
From then on, whenever a Dialpad call ends and its transcript is ready, CallNote automatically generates a file note from that transcript. The note lands in your CallNote library ready to review. You read it, make any edits, then lodge it - and push it to your CRM if you want. The write-up that used to take ten to fifteen minutes after the call is done by the time you hang up.
CallNote receives the transcript, never the audio
CallNote does not record your calls and never receives the call audio. Dialpad already transcribes the call on its side. When the transcript is ready, Dialpad sends CallNote the transcript and basic call details - the number, the person, the time. The recording itself stays in Dialpad. Troubleshooting
- No note appeared after a call. Check the call actually produced a transcript in Dialpad. CallNote only generates once the transcript is ready, and that needs Dialpad Ai to be on and set to start automatically.
- The key was rejected. The key has to come from a Dialpad Pro or Enterprise admin account. Standard plans have no API access, so their keys will not connect.
- You changed or lost the key. Generate a fresh key in Dialpad, then reconnect in CallNote with the new key. CallNote tidies up the old webhook for you when you reconnect.
- You want to disconnect. You can disconnect Dialpad at any time from the Integrations page in CallNote. CallNote removes the webhook from your Dialpad account when you do.
Common questions
Do I need a paid Dialpad plan to connect?
Yes. The connection uses the Dialpad API, and API access is only on the Pro and Enterprise plans. Standard plans do not have API access, so the key will not connect. You also need to be a company admin to generate the key.
Does CallNote record my Dialpad calls?
No. CallNote never records calls and never receives the call audio. Dialpad transcribes the call on its side, then sends CallNote the transcript and basic call details. CallNote generates the file note from that transcript. The recording stays in Dialpad.
Do I need Dialpad Ai transcription turned on?
Yes. CallNote works from the call transcript, and on Dialpad the transcript is produced by Dialpad Ai. It needs to be enabled at the company level and set to start automatically for calls. Without it the connection works but no transcript arrives, so no note is generated.
Do I have to set up the webhook myself?
No. When you paste your API key and connect, CallNote registers the webhook and subscribes it to the transcript event on your Dialpad account for you. There is nothing to configure by hand, and CallNote cleans it up if you disconnect or reconnect.
